Weekend deaths prompt call for wildlife fencing

Two people died in New Brunswick this weekend in accidents involving moose. The deaths have renewed a call for increased wildlife fencing in the province.

27-year old Christopher Miller was killed on Saturday night, after hitting a moose on the Maine Turnpike.

A second man died Sunday night after colliding with a moose on Route 7 near Welsford. The 66-year old Fredericton man was pronounced dead on the scene. His two sons were with him at the time of the accident, and were treated for injuries.

The area near Welsford is considered a hot zone for moose-related accidents. There is wildlife fencing in this area, starting half a kilometer down the highway were Sunday’s accident occurred.

Friends and family of individuals killed in accidents along the unfenced stretch of road are urging the Department of Transportation to erect additional fencing. However the Department says there are guidelines to installing wildlife fencing that must be followed.
