TORONTO – Photographer Alex Cherney is
lighting up the sky again with his breathtaking time-lapse video of the
southern lights. The stunning red aurora was caused by particles
from solar storms last month. The images were captured over the course of eight
hours overnight in late January near Melbourne, Australia.
Last summer, Cherney’s ‘Ocean Sky’ time-lapse video of Australia’s night sky went viral. The
beautiful collection of the southern Milky Way, as seen over the Southern
Ocean, was awarded the overall winner of the STARMUS astro-photography
competition in May.
Cherney took his first long exposure of the night sky in August 2009.
“It was my daughter who got me into astronomy,” the father-of-two told the Daily Mail. “She
came home from school with a project and asked if we could find aliens, so we
went along to a local astronomy club."
